2014 APT DC Chapter Symposium The Challenges of Preserving Modern Materials & Assemblies

The Association for Preservation Technology, Washington, DC chapter, in collaboration with the Docomomo DC Chapter, invites the submission of presentations for their annual symposium, which will be held on Friday, September 26, 2014 at the American Institute of Architects Headquarters Building in Washington, DC. The Symposium will address the challenges of preserving and conserving materials of the modern movement, focusing on post-war materials and assemblies.

Possible topics include:
 Durability and lifespan of modern materials and their maintenance 
 Difficulty of repair and incremental replacement 
 Impact on authenticity and integrity of large-scale replacement 
 Challenges of finding replacements for archaic materials
 Issues relating to curtain wall systems 
 Diagnostics and evaluation methods for modern materials 
 Conservation treatments for modern materials 
 Applying technology to the study, assessment and treatment of modern materials 
 Impact of changing building codes on existing assemblies

Abstracts are not limited to these suggestions and may be submitted on any topic, technical research, or case study related to the theme. Presentations that discuss case studies should demonstrate how the study or project contributes to the field of historic preservation and how it applies the symposium theme by providing in-depth analysis of lessons learned.

Please submit a typewritten abstract of no more than 400 words to info@aptdc.org no later than Friday, April 30th.Include “2014 Symposium Abstract Submission” as the subject line.

Presentations are typically 20 minutes in length; however, 40 minute presentations will also be considered. The following information must be included with the submission:

Please indicate if you are willing to lead a 90-min tour of your project on Saturday, September 27th.

Selection Notification and Speaker Responsibilities | Please read the following guidelines carefully:
 Each presenter will receive a complimentary registration for the symposium. Speakers will not be paid. 
 All travel and additional expenses are the responsibility of the speaker. 
 If your abstract is selected, you will be notified by May 19, 2014. 
 Presenters are required to use Microsoft PowerPoint for their presentations.
 PowerPoint presentation must be submitted to APT DC by the specified deadline (9/19/2014). 
 Speakers that fail to meet key deadlines may be removed from the program. 
 Abstracts will be posted on the APTDC website, along with speaker bios. 
 Presentations may be posted on the website prior to the event as PDF files to allow attendees to download andprint prior to the symposium.
