APT-DVC is sponsoring a half-day workshop at Eastern State Penitentiary on Thursday July 26 (rain date July 27) from 8:30am to 1 pm. This event is being held near the end of a two-week long training program being held for the HOPE Crew. The National Trust for Historic Preservation launched an initiative to train more young people in preservation crafts while helping to protect historic cultural sites on public lands. Named “HOPE Crew” for “Hands-OPreservation Experience;” the program links preservation projects to the national youth corps movement. It brings the potential for thousands of crew members to work on hundreds of sites, learning preservation craft skills while rehabilitating historic places.  At Eastern State, the HOPE Crew is comprised of members from PowerCorps PHL and led by David Gibney.

The program will begin with an hour-long presentation on the methods and materials for repointing historic masonry structures. Afterwards, participants will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with the HOPE Crew to repoint a wall section near the baseball diamond dating to 1879. An optional audio site tour will be provided to interested registrants from 1pm to 2pm.

Instruction will be provided by the International Masonry Institute and Pullman SST. This program counts towards 2 AIA Continuing Education Hours and lunch will be provided. Space is limited to 15 participants.
