Please join APT – Delaware Valley Chapter on Saturday, May 20th for a full day of programming at Bryn Athyn National Historical District.  Please note that there will be one combined walking tour in the morning for all participants and two concurrent programs in the late morning/afternoon: Stone Carving (limited to 12 participants) and Interior tour of Glen Cairn (limited to 30 participants).

Exterior Architectural Walking Tour

9am to 10 am

This program will begin with an exterior walking tour of the Bryn Athyn Historic District in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. Bryn Athyn was founded as a religious community by members of the denomination known as the New Church. The historic district encompasses the family homes of John Pitcairn and his sons Raymond and Harold, as well as the Bryn Athyn Cathedral, all of which were constructed between 1892 and 1938. Tour highlights will include Cairnwood, the beaux arts country home designed by Carrere & Hastings, as well as Glencairn, a medieval style arts and crafts castle that houses Raymond Pitcairn's extensive collection of medieval artwork. Also included on the walking tour will be the grounds of the Bryn Athyn Cathedral.

The walking tour will be led by Natalie Karas, an architectural conservator at Materials Conservation in Philadelphia and Jens Langlotz, Master Stone Carver.

Note: After the walking tour the group will separate into the stone carving participants and the interior tour participants

Stone Carving Workshop

10 am to 4 pm (limited to 12 participants)

Participants will review several different textures in dressed stone masonry and learn which chisels to use to achieve a chosen texture. The process of creating a straight planner surface will be demonstrated. Participants will be able to test various carving methods on their own piece of stone and execute techniques of carving their initials.  The participants will be able to keep their stone at the end of the program.  The stone and all masonry tools necessary for the program will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own tools if they have them.  Please wear comfortable work appropriate clothing.

Registration for the stone carving workshop is $10 for APT-DVC members and $50 for non APT-DVC Members and registration is required.
